What are Dry Screw Pumps?

A dry screw vacuum pump is a positive displacement pump that operates without oil. Two screw rotors rotate in opposite directions inside a cylindrical housing. The pumped medium enters via the inlet and is trapped and transported in chambers formed between the cylinder and the twin screws.

Advantages of Dry Screw Pumps

High vacuum

Dry screw pumps can provide high vacuum extraction effects and are suitable for processes and experiments with high vacuum requirements.

No oil pollution

Since no lubricating oil or liquid medium is required, dry screw pumps eliminate the possibility of oil pollution and meet environmental protection requirements.

Strong stability

The screw structure design makes the dry screw pump run smoothly, with low noise, easy maintenance and a long service life.

Energy saving and high efficiency

Dry screw pumps use advanced design and materials, with energy-saving and high efficiency characteristics, which can reduce energy consumption and operating costs.

Easy maintenance

Since there is no need to maintain the oil, the maintenance difficulty of dry screw pumps is lower than that of oil-sealed pumps, and there is no need to strictly control the quality and quantity of the oil.

Silent effect

Compared with traditional liquid ring vacuum pumps, dry screw pumps are quieter. This is because the structure of dry screw pumps is relatively simple, there is no sound of liquid flow, and its operation is relatively stable.

Working Principle of Dry Screw Pumps

Similar to screw compressors, the working process of screw dry vacuum pumps can be divided into three processes: suction, compression and exhaust. As the rotor rotates, each pair of meshing teeth completes the same working cycle one after another. Now let's take one pair of teeth as an example.

1

Suction process

The male rotor rotates counterclockwise, and the female screw rotates clockwise. The upper rotor end face is the suction section, and the lower end face is the exhaust end face.

2

Compression process

The rotor end face is the exhaust end face. Here, the male rotor rotates clockwise, and the female rotor rotates counterclockwise. The upper rotor end face is the suction section, and the lower end face is the exhaust end face.

3

Exhaust process

In the exhaust process of the screw pump, the exhaust process begins after the inter-tooth volume is connected to the exhaust orifice. As the inter-tooth volume continues to shrink, the gas with exhaust pressure is gradually discharged through the exhaust orifice.

Maintenance and care methods of dry screw pumps

Dry screw vacuum pumps are key equipment in vacuum technology. Their stable operation and long life benefit from meticulous maintenance and care measures.

1. Daily inspection matters:

1. Check the sealing condition: Regularly check the sealing condition of each part of the dry screw vacuum pump to ensure reasonable screw clearance and prevent gas leakage and increased energy consumption.

2. Keep the environment clean: Ensure that the area around the dry screw vacuum pump is clean and dry, and prevent dust, moisture and other pollutants from invading to ensure unimpeded operation.

3. Lubrication maintenance: Although the dry screw vacuum pump achieves oil-free operation, key components such as bearings and gears still need to be lubricated regularly to ensure smooth operation.

2. Detailed explanation of maintenance measures:

1. Replacement of wear-resistant parts: According to the usage, regularly replace the wear-resistant parts such as the screw and spindle of the dry screw vacuum pump to maintain its efficient and stable working condition.

2. Clean the pipes and filters: Clean the air intake pipes and filters of the dry screw vacuum pump regularly to avoid dust and impurities accumulation and improve the suction efficiency.

3. Check the motor and electrical system: Check the motor and electrical system of the dry screw vacuum pump regularly to ensure its stable operation and reduce the impact of electrical failures on the equipment.

FAQ

Q: What does a dry pump do?

A: A pump is defined as a DRY Vacuum Pump when the pump's functional area (pumping chamber), is completely dry/oil-free, and there is absolutely no sealing fluid (Oil/Water) used. As the name suggests, Dry Screw Vacuum Pumps do not use any fluid to create a vacuum.

Q: Can you run a screw pump dry?

A: Providing screws are lubricated prior to startup, units can be ran dry for a limited amount of time.

Q: What is the difference between a wet and dry pump?

A: Wet pumps have oil in the pumping chamber that serves two purposes. The first is the lubrication of the moving parts, while the second is to fill the clearances inside the pump to provide a deeper vacuum. Dry pumps have oil in the bearings and gears for lubrication, but the pump chamber itself is free of oil.

Q: What is the purpose of a screw pump?

A: Screw pumps are more helpful in pumping heavy oil. They even have the ability to pump higher flow rates and higher viscosity fluids. These pumps are capable of pumping both liquids and gases. For this reason, these pumps are used in many pumping industries.

Q: What is a dry screw pump?

A: Dry screw technology ensures high-performance and robust vacuum generation for industrial applications. Inside dry screw vacuum pumps, two screw rotors rotate in opposite directions. The pumped medium is trapped between the cylinder and the screw chambers. There, it is compressed and transported to the outlet.

Q: What is a dry pump system?

A: In a dry-sump system, the oil still falls to the base of the engine, but into a much shallower sump, where one or more scavenge pumps draw it away and transfer it to a (usually external) reservoir, where it is both cooled and de-aerated before being recirculated through the engine by a pressure pump.

Q: How efficient are screw pumps?

A: The screw pump, on the other hand, had a cast- steel runner whose surfaces were only partially smooth. No great ef- fort was made to bring up its point of maximum efficiency, and therefore it does not exceed 76 per cent at any point.

Q: Does screw pump need priming?

A: A screw pump is self-priming, meaning this process doesn't need to take place. This is because of the vacuum that is created within the pump. If a screw pump does become dry and continues to be used, it will cause damage. Eventually, dry running a screw pump will leave it irreparable.

Q: Can a twin screw pump run dry?

A: These types of pumps can handle a wide range of flows and pressures. With proper seal quench, twin screw pumps can run when dry. Twin screw pumps are true dual-duty pumps.

Q: Can screw pump run dry?

A: If mechanical seals are not sufficiently lubricated, they run dry. Temperatures rise and the sealing faces and o-rings are damaged - this eventually leads to leakage. Furthermore, damage to the screws in the form of abrasion and scoring and damage to the housing can occur after only a short time.

Q: What are the pros and cons of screw pumps?

A: They are capable of constant flow rates, have a controllable output and operate quietly and smoothly with low pulsation. They also have high volumetric efficiency and are capable of self-priming. One of the main disadvantages of screw pumps is that they can be expensive.
