What is Roots Vacuum Pump?

Roots pumps are dry vacuum pumps used in low, medium, high and ultra-high vacuum systems to produce “dry” conditions.
The simple (single-stage) roots pump is most commonly employed as a booster pump for use in combination with several types of fore pumps (such as rotary vane pumps, screw and liquid ring pumps) to improve (or ‘boost’) ultimate pressure and pumping speeds. When multistage roots pumps are employed, no fore pump is required and they can operate from atmospheric pressure. A multi-stage roots pump can consist of up to eight stages and employ several sets of rotors (on a shared shaft). Roots pumps are suitable where a dry and clean atmosphere is important or, more likely, essential.

Air Cooled Roots Vacuum Pump

Type of Roots Vacuum Pump

Single-Stage Roots Vacuum Pump
The single-stage Roots vacuum pump consists of two lobed rotors that rotate in opposite directions within a housing. As the rotors spin, they create a series of synchronized chambers, which effectively trap and transport gas or vapor. Single-stage Roots pumps are commonly used for low to medium vacuum applications and are known for their high pumping speed and compact design.

Multi-Stage Roots Vacuum Pump
Multi-stage Roots vacuum pumps are an advanced version of single-stage pumps, featuring multiple sets of rotors. These pumps offer higher compression ratios and are capable of achieving higher vacuum levels. By utilizing multiple stages, gas molecules are compressed and transported more efficiently, resulting in improved performance and a wider operating range.

Dry Roots Vacuum Pump
Dry Roots vacuum pumps operate without the need for any lubricating fluids. They are designed to handle both gases and vapors without contamination or pollution caused by oil or water. Dry pumps are particularly advantageous in applications where a clean, dry vacuum is required, such as in semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and food processing industries.

Wet Roots Vacuum Pump
Wet Roots vacuum pumps, also known as liquid ring vacuum pumps, utilize a liquid ring as the sealing and compression medium. These pumps are commonly used in applications where a higher level of vacuum is needed, such as in chemical processing, power generation, and paper manufacturing. Wet pumps are robust and can handle corrosive or condensable gases effectively.

High Vacuum Roots Pump
High Vacuum Roots pumps are designed for applications requiring extremely low pressures. These pumps are often used as booster pumps in conjunction with primary pumps like turbomolecular or diffusion pumps. They can significantly improve pumping speed and increase the pumping range of the primary pump, making them suitable for demanding applications in research, semiconductor fabrication, and vacuum coating industries.

Application of Roots Vacuum Pump

Vacuum Metallurgy Smelting
Vacuum metallurgy smelting is a critical industrial application that demands high efficiency and quality. In this process, the presence of impurities can severely impact the final product’s properties. Roots vacuum pumps come with an oil-free design, which prevents contamination by oil or any other foreign particle. These pumps have a high pumping speed, making them ideal for efficient removal of gas and vapor from the smelting chamber.

Degassing
Efficient degassing is crucial in industries like chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Roots vacuum pumps can effectively create a low-pressure environment by removing gas and vapor from a sealed chamber. The pump’s unique design with two rotating lobes generates high pumping speed, pulling gas or vapor through the inlet port and discharging it out through the exhaust port. This process can efficiently eliminate any form of contamination present in the sealed area. The pumps operate quietly and without vibration while providing energy efficiency, making them ideal for continuous operation.

Rolling
Roots vacuum pumps are crucial in rolling processes for steel, aluminum, and copper mills. They aid by creating low-pressure environments that help remove air from the system, leading to better-formed products. These pumps operate on the principle of using two rotating lobes that rotate in opposite directions to create suction and discharge through inlet and exhaust ports. Besides their high pumping speeds and large volume handling capacity, these pumps come with additional benefits such as low noise, compact design, and oil-free operation.

Chemical Processing
Roots vacuum pumps play a crucial role in the chemical processing industry. These pumps work with gases and vapors, making them ideal for handling various chemicals. Operating at pressures down to 10^-3 Torr, they allow for efficient handling of corrosive or reactive gases that are common in the industry. With high pumping speeds and oil-free operation, roots vacuum pumps provide greater productivity and faster processing times, improving the bottom line of chemical manufacturing facilities.

A Roots Pump Works on the Following Principle

A Roots vacuum pump is a rotary positive-displacement pump with two symmetrically formed impellers rotating past one other in close proximity inside the pump case. A toothed gear synchronizes the two rotors, which have a cross-section that resembles that of figure eight.

Only a few tenths of a millimeter separates the rotors from the casing wall, as well as between the rotors themselves. As a result, Roots pumps may run at high speeds without causing mechanical damage. Roots pumps, unlike rotary vane and dry pumps, are not oil-sealed, hence internal leakage of dry compressing pumps by design limits compression ratios to 10–100. Internal leakage in Roots pumps, and other dry compressed pumps for that matter, is primarily caused by the working principle, which assigns specified surface areas of the pump chamber to the intake and compression sides of the pump.

These surface regions (rotors and casing) are loaded with gas (flow separation) during the compression process, and this gas is expelled during the suction phase. The clearance between the two rotors, as well as between the rotors and the casing wall, determines the thickness of the moving gas layer. It is not feasible to base one’s decision on the cold state because of the Roots pump’s rather complicated thermal conditions.

What is The Difference Between Roots Vacuum Pump and Water Ring Vacuum Pump?

Different performance characteristics

The characteristics of Roots vacuum pump are: fast start, low power consumption, low operation and maintenance cost, high pumping speed, high efficiency, insensitive to a small amount of water vapor and dust contained in the pumped gas; water ring The vacuum pump has a compact structure and a high speed of the pump. Generally, it can be directly connected to the motor without a reduction device. The suction is uniform, the work is stable and reliable, the operation is simple, and the maintenance is convenient.

Different scope of application

Roots vacuum pump is widely used in smelting, degassing and rolling in vacuum metallurgy, as well as vacuum distillation, vacuum concentration and vacuum drying in chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries. Mainly used in coal mine (gas pumping), chemical, pharmaceutical, mining, paper, food, beer, building materials, plastics, metallurgy, electrical appliances and other industries.

Different working principles

Roots vacuum pump is equipped with two leaf-shaped rotors that rotate synchronously in opposite directions. The water ring pump realizes suction, compression and exhaust by the change of the volume of the pump cavity, so it belongs to the variable volume vacuum pump.

Working Principle of Roots Vacuum Pump

The structure of the Roots pump is shown as Fig. In the pump cavity, there are two rotors in "8"-shape, which are mounted in a pair of parallel shafts; they do synchronous rotary motion opposite to each other driven by a pair of gears at the transmission ratio of 1. There are some gaps between the rotor and the rotor and the pump casing wall, and can achieve high speed operation. As the Roots pump is a kind of vacuum pump, usually the compression ratio is very low, so the high vacuum pump need to backing pump. The Roots pump vacuum degassing depends on the pump itself structure and manufacturing precision, but also depends on the backing pump’s ultimate vacuum. In order to improve the pump’s ultimate vacuum, the Roots pumps can be used in series.

Similar Roots pump working principle and Roots blowers. Due to the rotor continues to rotate, was pumping gas from the suction aspiration to the space V0 between the rotor and the pump shell, and then be discharged through the exhaust port. The post inspiratory V0 space is completely closed state, so gas at the pump cavity no compression and expansion. But when the rotor turn at the top edge of the exhaust port, V0 space is connected with the exhaust side, due to the higher exhaust gas pressure side, some gas back washed to V0 space to the gas pressure suddenly increased. When the rotor continues to rotate, the gas discharged from the pump outside.

Also from the pump, in conjunction with the pump inlet to below the Roots pump rotor from 0° to 180° pumping process. At 0℃ position, left the rotor from V0 is sealed volume of gas. When turning to the Figure B, the chamber and the exhaust port are communicated. Due to the exhaust side pressure is higher, causing a portion of the gas back washed over. When transferred to the 90° position, a left rotor enclosed gas back flushing gas discharged to the outside. At this time, the right rotor pump inlet V0 is sealed volume of gas.

How To Maintenance Roots Vacuum Pump

● Always check the oil level position shall be adjusted to conform to requirements of non-compliance when the pump is running to the Roots, the oil level to mark the center of the oil prevail.

● Drain intervals according to the actual conditions of use and the ability to meet performance requirements, etc. considered at the discretion of the user. Most of the new Roots vacuum pump, pumping gas when in addition to a clean, dry, oil change is recommended once in about 100 hours of work. Until the oil after you do not see a black metal powder can later be extended drain intervals.

● Always check the oil, the discovery of oil deterioration should be replaced with new oil, ensuring the Roots pump is working properly.

● In general, the Roots pump after 2000 hours of work should be carried out maintenance, inspection Jue rubber seals degree of aging, check the exhaust valve piece is cracking, cleaning deposits on the valve and the exhaust valve seat dirt. Cleaning the entire Roots pump chamber parts, such as the rotor, rotary vane, springs and other general cleaning with gasoline, and drying. after rubber parts can be cleaned with a dry cloth. cleaning assembly should be gently accidentally touch injuries.

● Bearing the body to join the bearing lubrication oil, observe the oil level should be the subject of the centerline of the oil, lubricating oil should be replaced or supplemented.

● Check the Roots pump tubing and junction without loosening. Rotate the Roots pump, take a look at the vacuum roots blower is flexible.

● Should be re-assembled after the test run, are generally required to empty running two hours and the second oil change, because cleaning the Roots pump would have a certain amount of volatile matter, to be operating normally, and then put to work.

FAQ

Q: What is a root pump used for?

A: The roots pump is used to generate medium vacuum. Its special benefit is that it works without any oil, in contrast to therotary vane pump. Accordingly, it can be used for delivery of aggressive media.

Q: What is the function of the root pump?

A: The simple (single-stage) roots pump is most commonly employed as a booster pump for use in combination with several types of fore pumps (such as rotary vane pumps, screw and liquid ring pumps) to improve (or 'boost') ultimate pressure and pumping speeds.

Q: What is the difference between Roots blower and vacuum pump?

A: Roots blower is used for positive pressure condition, while roots vacuum pump is used for negative pressure condition. In structure, the two main machines are the same, but there are slight differences in inlet and outlet.

Q: What is the difference between rotary pump and roots pump?

A: Roots Blower is suitable for applications that require low-pressure air or gas, with a maximum pressure ratio of 1.5. On the other hand, Rotary Lobe Pump is ideal for applications requiring high-pressure liquids, with a pressure range of up to 20 bar.

Q: Does pump speed affect pressure?

A: A pump that can manage high speeds helps to shear the fluid off the tip to release smaller volumes of fluid over air. However, higher speeds can often cause a buildup of pressure in a system. When both factors are high, it is important that you have a pump motor that can manage each in an adequate manner.

Q: How do I slow down my pump speed?

A: Adjusting the speed control will allow you to slow down the pump without additional parts or equipment. Another option is to install a variable frequency drive (VFD). This type of device utilizes electronic components, such as sensors and transistors, to adjust the speed of an AC electric motor.

Q: What are Roots vacuum pumps used for?

A: Roots vacuum pumps are primarily used to generate medium to high vacuums in various applications, including chemical processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication, and vacuum coating processes.

Q: How does a Roots vacuum pump work?

A: Roots pumps operate by trapping gas between two meshing lobes within a pump casing. As the lobes rotate in opposite directions, they trap and compress the gas, pushing it towards the exhaust port. This action reduces the volume of the chamber containing the gas, thereby lowering the pressure and creating a vacuum.

Q: What is the difference between a Roots vacuum pump and other types of vacuum pumps?

A: Compared to other types of vacuum pumps like turbomolecular pumps or diffusion pumps, Roots pumps are capable of handling larger volumes of gas but typically achieve lower ultimate pressures. Roots pumps are often used as roughing pumps to bring the vacuum level down to an appropriate range before using a secondary, higher-efficiency vacuum pump.

Q: Can a Roots vacuum pump produce a true vacuum?

A: No, Roots vacuum pumps cannot produce a true vacuum (absolute zero pressure). They require a backing pump to reach very low pressures. The combination of a Roots pump with a backing pump allows for the creation of a deeper vacuum than either could achieve alone.

Q: What factors affect the performance of a Roots vacuum pump?

A: Performance is influenced by factors such as the design of the pump lobes, clearance between the lobes and housing, rotational speed, and the temperature and composition of the gas being pumped. Contamination and wear can also significantly impact performance.

Q: How do you maintain a Roots vacuum pump?

A: Regular maintenance is critical for maintaining the performance of a Roots vacuum pump. This includes checking and replacing gaskets and seals, lubricating moving parts, monitoring the oil level and condition, and ensuring that the cooling system is functioning properly. It's also important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for service intervals and maintenance procedures.

Q: What are the advantages of using a Roots vacuum pump?

A: The primary advantages of Roots pumps include their ability to handle large volumes of gas at relatively high flow rates, their robustness and reliability, and their ability to quickly reach intermediate vacuum levels. They are also generally easy to maintain and can operate in a wide range of temperatures and pressures.

Q: What is the working principle of a Roots vacuum pump?

A: The Roots pump consists of two or more rotors (lobes) that counter-rotate inside a housing without touching each other or the housing walls. As the lobes rotate, they create regions of reduced volume, which draw in gas from the inlet side. The gas is then carried around the housing and compressed before being expelled through the outlet port. The action of the lobes increases the pressure of the gas on the inlet side, thus creating a vacuum.

Q: What is the basic construction of a Roots vacuum pump?

A: A Roots vacuum pump typically consists of two intermeshing rotors housed in a close-clearance cylindrical chamber. The rotors are precision-machined to fit closely together without touching during operation, which allows them to move large volumes of gas without significant compression.

Q: How does a Roots vacuum pump create a vacuum?

A: As the rotors turn, they trap pockets of gas between them and the walls of the pump casing. These pockets of gas are then carried from the inlet side to the outlet side of the pump. The action of the rotors effectively transports the gas without compressing it significantly, resulting in a decrease in the volume of the gas in the chamber, which in turn creates a vacuum.
