What are Dry Screw Vacuum Pumps?

A dry screw vacuum pump is a positive displacement pump that operates without oil. Two screw rotors rotate in opposite directions inside a cylindrical housing. The pumped medium enters via the inlet and is trapped and transported in chambers formed between the cylinder and the twin screws. Due to the rotation of the screws, the pumped medium is compressed and expelled via the outlet. No lubricants or operating fluids are required in the compression chamber. The minimal clearance between the screw rotors and the housing optimizes the internal seal.

Advantages of Dry Screw Vacuum Pumps

1. The surface of the working chamber and screw rotor often has a layer of anti-corrosion coating, which is designed for harsh process environments and can greatly reduce the impact of the environment on vacuum drying technology.

2. Gas does not need to be compressed in a dry screw pump, so condensable gas can be extracted without consuming oil, so there will be no oil leakage.

3. The external structure of the dry screw pump is relatively simple and it is very convenient to maintain.

4. The extracted gas will be directly discharged from the pump body without polluting the water and putting no pressure on the environment.

Dry Screw Vacuum Pumps Working Principle

Dry vacuum pump technology offers clear, measurable advantages in a wide variety of essential applications. A properly designed dry screw vacuum pump ensures the processing needs are accomplished with a safe, reliable, and cost-effective solution.

Dry screw vacuum pumps require no water or oil for sealing or lubrication in the vacuum stages. Consequently, these dry vacuum systems eliminate effluent generation, pollution, and high treatment costs.

Vacuum generation in dry screw vacuum pumps explained in three steps

1. Inlet

The pumped medium enters via the inlet.

Two screw rotors rotate in opposite directions inside the cylindrical housing.

2. Compression

The pumped medium is trapped and transported in chambers formed between the cylinder and the twin screws.

The chamber size continuously decreases, and the pumped medium is compressed.

During the compression process, the screw rotors do not come in contact with each other or the housing.

3. Outlet

After compression, the pumped medium is expelled through the outlet.

The use of a twin screw design ensures the shortest possible gas path between the pump inlet and outlet, resulting in a fast compression process and quicker cycle times.

Components of dry screw vacuum pump

1. Motor

The motor of dry screw vacuum pump is the power source for driving the screw rotor to rotate, and a three-phase asynchronous motor is usually selected. The power and power frequency of the motor should be selected according to the actual use environment and the requirements of the extraction object.

2. Screw rotor

The screw rotor is the core component of the dry screw vacuum pump, mainly composed of the main screw, the extrusion screw and the bearing support at both ends. When working, the screw rotor rotates along the long axis of the stator, and the gas is discharged along the screw to reduce the volume, thereby realizing vacuum extraction.

3. Stator

The stator is the working part that generates vacuum in the dry screw vacuum pump. It is formed by two symmetrical stators supporting each other, and the internal cavity provides working space for the screw rotor. An appropriate gap is maintained between the inner surface of the stator and the surface of the screw rotor to ensure the sealing of the gas.

4. Control system

The control system of the dry screw vacuum pump is a key part of controlling and monitoring the operation of the entire system. It is usually composed of PLC, human-machine interface and various sensors, which can realize the functions of automatic start and stop of the pump, leakage detection and troubleshooting.

5. Cooling water system

Dry screw vacuum pumps will generate a lot of heat when running for a long time, which will have a negative impact on the pump body and seals. The cooling water system can reduce the temperature of the pump body by circulating cooling water, so that it is in a normal working environment.

Dry Screw Vacuum Pump Application

Dry screw vacuum pumps are widely used in many industries, including the following:

Semiconductor and electronics industry

Dry screw vacuum pumps are used in semiconductor manufacturing for wafer cleaning, etching and other processes that require high vacuum due to their high cleanliness.

Chemical industry

In the chemical industry, dry screw vacuum pumps are used in efficient recovery processes such as vacuum distillation and solvent extraction, which helps to improve production efficiency and product quality.

Pharmaceutical industry

In the pharmaceutical industry, dry screw vacuum pumps are used to recover liquid medicines and drug intermediates, as well as to provide a clean and sterile production environment, which is crucial to ensuring drug quality and production safety.

Petrochemical industry

The petrochemical industry is also an important application area for dry screw vacuum pumps, mainly used in gas recovery systems in refineries and chemical plants, which helps to achieve resource recycling and energy conservation and emission reduction.

FAQ

Q: What are the benefits of a dry vacuum pump?

A: Dry screw vacuum pumps offer a range of advantages that make them a versatile and efficient choice for specific vacuum applications. Their dry operation, high vacuum level, robust construction, and low maintenance requirements make them suitable for industries that require a clean and reliable vacuum environment.

Q: What is the difference between a wet and dry vacuum pump?

A: Wet pumps have oil in the pumping chamber that serves two purposes. The first is the lubrication of the moving parts, while the second is to fill the clearances inside the pump to provide a deeper vacuum. Dry pumps have oil in the bearings and gears for lubrication, but the pump chamber itself is free of oil.

Q: How does a dry screw vacuum pump work?

A: The Dry Screw vacuum pump working principle involves two CS screws with variable pitch & tapered design run parallel to each other with small clearances. Gas flows in an axial direction from the inlet port to exhaust port. The pumped gases move axially towards the exhaust port by the spiralling motion of the screw.

Q: Where are dry vacuum pumps used?

A: Food Industry - The food industry also uses dry vacuum pumps in the production of various food products, such as freeze-drying and packaging. Environmental Industry - In the environmental industry, dry vacuum pumps are used for air sampling, soil remediation, and wastewater treatment.

Q: What is the most efficient type of vacuum pump?

A: Screw vacuum pumps offer excellent energy efficiency and low costs throughout their lifespan. The operating speed can be raised and adjusted.

Q: What does a dry vacuum do?

A: Dry vacuums are only intended for cleaning up dry materials.

Q: What is the reason that dry vacuum pumps do not need any lubricants?

A: Dry pumps minimize contamination of the process from oil and other chemistries, keeping the product chemistry pure. Dry pumps can also be fitted with booster pumps to achieve higher capacities and wider vacuum ranges. One distinct advantage is the absence of oil in these mechanisms.

Q: What is the life expectancy of a vacuum pump?

A: A vacuum pump that is treated well will last longer. Depending on the type of vacuum pump, a lifetime of 30 years or more is possible! A minor maintenance issue – like an oil change, or replacing a worn vane or seal – is a relatively low investment, both in terms of time and cost.

Q: Why do vacuum pumps go bad?

A: If dirt or other contaminants enter the vacuum pump chamber or valves, overall pump performance can be impacted. When pumps need more time to accomplish operations, they may be in danger of failing. At this point, thoroughly cleaning your pump and ensuring that no contaminants reach other parts is a necessity.

Q: What is dry vacuum vs wet vacuum pump?

A: Water-based wet pumps use water to seal or lubricate. Oil-based pumps use oil. Dry pumps use PTFE dry polymer seals instead of water or oil. A dry vacuum pump may also have a diaphragm to keep the swept gas away from the mechanism that pumps.
