What are Dry Vacuum Pumps?

A dry vacuum pump is a type of pump that does not require any oil or other lubricants to operate. Instead, it uses a mechanism that relies on the movement of the vanes or rotors to create a vacuum. The vanes or rotors are located inside the pump's chamber and rotate at high speeds to create a vacuum. As the vanes or rotors rotate, they trap the air and other gases inside the chamber, and then expel them through the exhaust port.

Advantages of Dry Vacuum Pumps

No contamination

Because dry vacuum pumps do not require any oil or other lubricants to operate, there is no risk of contamination. This makes dry vacuum pumps ideal for applications where contamination is a concern, such as in the semiconductor and medical industries.

Low maintenance cost

Dry vacuum pumps do not require cooling or lubricating oil, so their maintenance costs are low. At the same time, due to its contactless design, it does not produce a mixture of oil vapor and other gases, making its maintenance more convenient.

Insensitive to the type of pumped gas

Compared with traditional lubricating oil pumps, dry vacuum pumps do not require the use of lubricating oil, so there will be no quality problems due to changes in the type of pumped gas. They are insensitive to the type of pumped gas and are very suitable for some special industrial fields.

Environmental protection and energy saving

Dry vacuum pumps do not require lubricating oil and cooling water, making them environmentally friendly and energy-saving. They do not produce waste liquid and waste gas, and do not cause pollution and noise pollution to the environment, making them green and environmentally friendly products in modern production.

Working Principle of Dry Vacuum Pump

A dry vacuum pump is a vacuum pump without oil or liquid working medium. It mainly achieves gas removal and vacuum improvement through geometric changes between the moving and stationary blades of the exhaust gas cavity. The working principle of a dry vacuum pump is based on compressed air to rotate the moving blades, and the gas is sucked into the exhaust cavity from the air inlet through the action of the moving blades, and then the gas is compressed and discharged.

Application of Dry vacuum pumps

Dry vacuum pumps have a wide range of applications in various industries due to their unique advantages over other types of vacuum pumps. Some of the most common applications of dry vacuum pumps are:

Semiconductor Industry

Used in the semiconductor industry, where cleanliness and low contamination are critical. They are used to create a vacuum in the deposition chambers during the manufacturing process of microchips.

Medical Industry

Used in the medical industry, particularly in the production of medical devices such as pacemakers, catheters, and other implantable devices.

Food Industry

The food industry also uses dry vacuum pumps in the production of various food products, such as freeze-drying and packaging.

Environmental Industry

In the environmental industry, dry vacuum pumps are used for air sampling, soil remediation, and wastewater treatment.

Used in research and development applications, such as in laboratories for creating a vacuum in experiments.

Chemical Industry

Used in the chemical industry for distillation, drying, and other processes that require a vacuum.

Aerospace Industry

In the aerospace industry, dry vacuum pumps are used to create a vacuum in the chamber during testing of various equipment and components.

Power Generation

Used in power generation industries, particularly in nuclear power plants, for various applications such as cooling towers, steam turbines, and others.

5 vacuum pump maintenance tips
1

Inspect the surrounding environment

Vacuum pumps require the right conditions to operate at their best. In the worst conditions, they have a greater chance of breaking down and creating a gridlock in your operations.

The airflow around your pump can be critical to its optimal performance. When the pump was first installed, the airflow might have been excellent. Check this frequently for any changes.

2

Conduct a visual pump inspection

Most vacuum pumps come equipped with a sight glass. This makes frequent visual inspection of the oil inside the pump a simple matter.

Clean oil will appear about the same color as vegetable oil, which is nearly opaque. As the oil collects contaminants, it will get darker. Highly contaminated oil will be dark brown or even black. By the time it turns this color, the integrity of your pump may be compromised, and it could need off-site servicing.

3

Do regular oil & filter changes

According to Blower and Vacuum Best Practices, dry pumps typically require an oil change in the gearbox about once per year. You may need to do this twice annually for heavy usage. In comparison, an oil-sealed pump could require an oil and filter change up to monthly depending on their usage and application.

This is also the proper time to check and change oil filters if equipped. When in doubt about the process, parts to use, or timing of oil and filter changes for your vacuum pump, refer to the owner's manual for your specific model or contact the manufacturer.

4

Perform leak testing

By leak testing your pump system periodically after it's been installed, you can ensure that there is a vacuum-tight seal though the various connections. Eliminating these leaks can prolong the life of your pump and improve the quality of the work it produces.

Keeping foreign elements out of your vacuum pump is critical. This includes debris, moisture, and oxygen, which are all contaminants that can compromise the integrity of your unit and reduce its effectiveness.

5

Create some leeway in your process

Every pump requires maintenance and downtime to operate at peak performance. Ignoring this fact is asking for trouble, and you'll likely find that your pump quits on you at the worst possible time for your business.

Instead of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best, a better plan is to build some leeway into your process. Have a spare pump on hand that can pick up some of the slack while you perform routine maintenance, or while the pump is sent to the OEM for additional work.
